Human activities have extensive influences on wildlife communities through lethal and sublethal effects. Protected areas (PAs) can reduce lethal impacts of humans on wildlife by reducing direct killing of animals, but whether PAs can help mitigate sublethal impacts on animal behaviors, such as the human-induced shifts toward nocturnal activity (hereafter nocturnal shifts), remains unclear. Using extensive camera-trap data from 21 study sites encompassing 1897 camera locations inside and outside PAs across a global biodiversity hotspot, the Mountains of Southwest China, we examined the differences in nocturnal activities of 29 mammal species under varying values of the human modification index (HMI) inside and outside PAs at community and guild levels. At the community level, the shift to nocturnal activities as HMI increased was more pronounced inside than outside PAs (p > 0.95). Except for the diurnal and carnivore guilds, most guilds delayed significantly their activity time as HMI increased outside PAs (86–100% probability density [PD] > 0). Delays in different guilds ranged from 1.23 to 2.89 h as HMI increased from 0 to 0.35. Inside PAs, only omnivores showed a significant delay (84% PD > 0). These findings provide behavioral evidence that PAs provide temporal refuge for mammals by reducing human impacts on their diel rhythms, revealing an important mechanism by which PAs contribute to wildlife conservation through their mitigation of sublethal human impacts.

Risk assessment is needed for China's new conviction standards based on monetary value.

The rising concentration of greenhouse gases, coupled with environmental changes such as albedo shifts, is accelerating the approach to critical climate tipping points. These changes have triggered significant biological responses on a global scale, underscoring the urgent need for robust climate change risk assessments for species and ecosystems. We conducted a systematic literature review using the Web of Science database. Our bibliometric analysis shows an exponential growth in publications since 2000, with over 200 papers published annually since 2019. Our bibliometric analysis reveals that the number of studies has exponentially increased since 2000, with over 200 papers published annually since 2019. High-frequency keywords such as ‘impact’, ‘risk’, ‘vulnerability’, ‘response’, ‘adaptation’, and ‘prediction’ were prevalent, highlighting the growing importance of assessing climate change risks. We then identified five universally accepted concepts for assessing the climate change risk on species and ecosystems: exposure, sensitivity, adaptivity, vulnerability, and response. We provided an overview of the principles, applications, advantages, and limitations of climate change risk modeling approaches such as correlative approaches, mechanistic approaches, and hybrid approaches. Finally, we emphasize that the emerging trends of risk assessment of climate change, encompass leveraging the concept of telecoupling, harnessing the potential of geography, and developing early warning mechanisms.

Forest restoration is one of the most promising and powerful approaches to tackle the grand challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. However, translating the growing global momentum for forest restoration into concrete biodiversity gains has remained elusive. In this Review, we describe the reforestation approaches and forest restoration methods currently used and how they affect biodiversity; summarize the current evidence, main determinants and knowledge gaps of biodiversity outcomes of forest restoration; and describe the emerging opportunities for planning, financing and monitoring biodiversity-centred forest restoration. We conclude with recommendations on why, where, how and for whom to restore forests while co-producing knowledge to sustain effective, long-lasting positive effects for biodiversity. Biodiversity is usually favoured by ecological restoration, especially through natural regeneration and in less disturbed conditions, yet the predominant focus on trees has held back broader effects across multiple taxa and biodiversity dimensions. Harnessing emerging funding opportunities and realizing the biodiversity benefits of forest restoration will require defining clear restoration goals and objectives pertaining to biodiversity in both policy frameworks and individual projects, using appropriate restoration strategies and approaches, implementing adequate monitoring and disclosure of results and ensuring mechanisms for sustained funding.

There has been rapid intraspecific trait change in many species over the past few centuries. While the impacts of such long-term changes on community functional structure remain unclear, it is vital to evaluate and predict responses of biodiversity and ecosystem function to global change. We examined intraspecific trait changes of 548 bird species from 86,539 specimens collected over the past 140 years and species composition data for 840 bird assemblages surveyed between 1969 and 2021 in North America. We found that rapid intraspecific trait changes have substantially impacted community-level trait composition and functional diversity of communities. Specifically, intraspecific downsizing has reversed the direction of change in community-weighted mean body size that would be expected from species composition change alone. Additionally, intraspecific changes of <3% across four traits have expanded community trait space and accelerated the rate of increase of functional richness across studied assemblages. Our findings highlight that intraspecific trait change is a key driver of community functional reorganization and should be considered alongside species composition change when assessing biodiversity responses to global change.

Wood production is a major form of human land use with a heavy environmental footprint. An important strategy to limit this footprint is high-yielding tree plantations to reduce production in otherwise more extensive areas, which necessitates following optimal rotation lengths for plantation species that maximize their production volume. However, this requirement is often constrained by the lack of robust growth models. This barrier is particularly notable in southern China—a region with an extensive plantation estate that accounts for > 50 % of the country’s annual wood production. For many plantation species in this region, it remains unclear whether current rotation lengths are conducive to efficient wood production. Here we parameterized growth models for six most production-important species in southern China (Cunninghamia lanceolata, Eucalyptus spp., Pinus massoniana, Castanopsis hystrix, Mytilaria laosensis, and Michelia macclurei), based on an extensive empirical dataset compiled from 394 studies that distinguished between monospecific and mixed-species stands in which the trees were growing. From these models, we derived volume-optimal rotation lengths for each species to compare with its rotation lengths currently in use. We found that across our study species, trees exhibited faster growth in mixed-species stands over monospecific stands. For most species, their volume-optimal rotation lengths were substantially longer than those currently in use, suggesting that forestry policies should consider adopting or incentivizing longer rotations to improve production. However, for Eucalyptus spp.—an economically critical species group in the region—volume-optimal rotation lengths were shorter than those currently applied, underscoring the importance of species-specific management recommendations.

The biodiversity impacts of agricultural deforestation vary widely across regions. Previous efforts to explain this variation have focused exclusively on the landscape features and management regimes of agricultural systems, neglecting the potentially critical role of ecological filtering in shaping deforestation tolerance of extant species assemblages at large geographical scales via selection for functional traits. Here we provide a large-scale test of this role using a global database of species abundance ratios between matched agricultural and native forest sites that comprises 71 avian assemblages reported in 44 primary studies, and a companion database of 10 functional traits for all 2,647 species involved. Using meta-analytic, phylogenetic and multivariate methods, we show that beyond agricultural features, filtering by the extent of natural environmental variability and the severity of historical anthropogenic deforestation shapes the varying deforestation impacts across species assemblages. For assemblages under greater environmental variability—proxied by drier and more seasonal climates under a greater disturbance regime—and longer deforestation histories, filtering has attenuated the negative impacts of current deforestation by selecting for functional traits linked to stronger deforestation tolerance. Our study provides a previously largely missing piece of knowledge in understanding and managing the biodiversity consequences of deforestation by agricultural deforestation.

Migratory birds are experiencing widespread population declines, underscoring the urgency of effective conservation actions. Long-term monitoring of migratory birds, especially during migration, is crucial for such actions yet remains technically challenging. Bioacoustic monitoring of nocturnal flight calls (NFCs) constitutes a promising technique to monitor migratory birds during migration. Such monitoring has increased in North America and Europe, but its application on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway (EAAF) remains limited. Here, we present findings from an NFC monitoring project conducted at a recording station in central Beijing, China over four migration seasons. From around 3,350 hours of recording effort, we manually extracted and identified 84,135 NFCs, involving at least 111 species or species groups that are associated with a wide range of habitat types. We also found that NFCs provided additional information on species’ migration phenology in comparison with citizen science observation data. To our knowledge, this study is the first formal investigation of bird migration using NFC monitoring on the EAAF, serving as a proof-of-concept case for wider, long-term monitoring efforts in this traditionally understudied region. Our findings also highlight the significance of incorporating migratory bird conservation into urban planning and land management practices.

Largely driven by agricultural pressures, biodiversity has experienced great changes globally. Exploring biodiversity responses to agricultural practices associated with agricultural intensification can benefit biodiversity conservation in agricultural landscapes. However, the effects of agricultural practices may also extend to natural habitats. Moreover, agricultural impacts may also vary with geographical region. We analyze biodiversity responses to landscape cropland coverage, cropping frequency, fertiliser and yield, among different land-use types and across geographical regions. We find that species richness and total abundance generally respond negatively to increased landscape cropland coverage. Biodiversity reductions in human land-use types (pasture, plantation forest and cropland) were stronger in tropical than non-tropical regions, which was also true for biodiversity reductions with increasing yield in both human and natural land-use types. Our results underline substantial biodiversity responses to agricultural practices not only in cropland but also in natural habitats, highlighting the fact that biodiversity conservation demands a greater focus on optimizing agricultural management at the landscape scale.

Forest restoration is being scaled up globally, carrying major expectations of environmental and societal benefits. Current discussions on ensuring the effectiveness of forest restoration are predominantly focused on the land under restoration per se. But this focus neglects the critical issue that land use and its drivers at larger spatial scales have strong implications for forest restoration outcomes, through the influence of landscape context and, importantly, potential off-site impacts of forest restoration that must be accounted for in measuring its effectiveness. To ensure intended restoration outcomes, it is crucial to integrate forest restoration into land-use planning at spatial scales large enough to account for — and address — these larger-scale influences, including the protection of existing native ecosystems. In this review, we highlight this thus-far neglected issue in conceptualizing forest restoration for the delivery of multiple desirable benefits regarding biodiversity and ecosystem services. We first make the case for the need to integrate forest restoration into large-scale land-use planning, by reviewing current evidence on the landscape-level influences and off-site impacts pertaining to forest restoration. We then discuss how science can guide the integration of forest restoration into large-scale land-use planning, by laying out key features of methodological frameworks required, reviewing the extent to which existing frameworks carry these features, and identifying methodological innovations needed to bridge the potential shortfall. Finally, we critically review the status of existing methods and data to identify future research efforts needed to advance these methodological innovations and, more broadly, the effective integration of forest restoration design into large-scale land-use planning.

For decades, China has implemented restoration programs on a large scale, thanks to its capacity to set policy and mobilize funding resources. An understanding of China’s restoration achievements and remaining challenges will help to guide future efforts to restore 30% of its diverse ecosystems under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Here we summarize the major transitions in China’s approach to ecosystem restoration since the 1970s, with a focus on the underlying motivations for restoration, approaches to ecosystem management, and financing mechanisms. Whereas China’s restoration efforts were predominantly guided by the delivery of certain ecosystem functions and services in earlier decades, more recently it has come to emphasize the restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem integrity. Accordingly, the focal ecosystems, approaches, and financing mechanisms of restoration have also been considerably diversified. This evolution is largely guided by the accumulation of scientific evidence and past experiences. We highlight the key challenges facing China’s restoration efforts and propose future directions to improve restoration effectiveness, with regard to goal setting, monitoring, stakeholder involvement, adaptive management, resilience under climate change, and financing.

Forests are spatially and temporally dynamic, such that forest degradation is best quantified across whole landscapes and over the long term. The European Union’s forest degradation policy, which focuses on contemporary primary forest conversion to plantations, ignores other globally prevalent forestry practices that can flip forests into a degraded state.

Aims: Migratory birds are experiencing widespread population declines, highlighting the urgency of effective conservation actions. Various migratory bird species, especially migratory landbirds, have been documented to use urban green space as stopover sites, including for refueling purposes. Considering the ongoing global urbanization, urban green space can potentially present great opportunities for the conservation of migratory landbirds by providing high-quality stopover habitats for these birds. However, this prospect premises on the accurate assessment of the stopover habitat quality of urban green space for migratory landbirds, including under specific management measures. In this study, we assessed the stopover habitat quality of an urban park in Beijing for migratory landbirds over a nine-year period, and we tested the response of this quality to a set of urban wilding measures implemented by the park to increase the naturalness of park vegetation.

Methods: We measured the stopover habitat quality for migratory landbirds by refueling conditions as represented by the rate of birds’ body mass gain, focusing on the Cuihu Wetland Park in the northwestern corner of central Beijing where a bird ringing program has been running since 2014. We used ringing data from 2015 to 2023 to estimate the hourly rate of body mass gain for each species within each migration season, for the species-season combinations with ≥ 50 captured individuals. We further examined whether this rate responded positively to the urban wilding measures implemented in the park since 2017 (i.e. allowing the vegetation to naturally develop by not mowing, pruning, or clearing leaflitter and seedlings).

Results: Of the 19 species-season combinations we were able to assess, we observed significant hourly body mass gain for the majority of combinations, involving 12 migratory landbird species from four families. However, overall, we did not find obvious impacts of urban wilding measures on birds’ refueling conditions, with only two species-season combinations showing indications of hourly body mass gain under these measures.

Conclusions: Our results suggest that Cuihu Wetland Park can offer positive refueling conditions for multiple species of migratory landbirds that have diverse dietary preferences and foraging strategies, providing scientific evidence for the value of urban green space as stopover habitat for migratory landbirds. Additionally, urban wilding measures may have enhanced these refueling conditions for at least some of the species, although further research is needed to robustly test this potential benefit. More generally, our study also serves as a proof-of-concept case for wider assessments of stopover habitat quality for migratory landbirds using data on their refueling performance.

Forest loss is a leading threat to global biodiversity. For many mountains worldwide, forest loss appears to occur disproportionately at lower elevations. This pattern—if confirmed—means widespread loss and scarcity of lower-elevation forest habitat, with profound biodiversity implications within and beyond these elevations. However, there remains no global assessment of this pattern based on robustly mapped forest loss, crucially by disentangling forest loss from the natural absence of forest. We fill this gap and demonstrate disproportionate forest loss at lower elevations for >65% of all 769 mountains in the world’s forested ecoregions that we assessed. We find a clear lack of lower-elevation forest—most of which remains unprotected—and associated warmer and drier climatic conditions, explainable by high human impacts and low precipitation at these elevations. Our findings call for targeted forest protection and restoration at lower elevations for mountains worldwide, including integrated mountain-scale conservation planning for entire elevational gradients.

Tropical forest restoration stands to deliver important conservation gains, particularly in lowland Southeast Asia, which has suffered some of the world's highest rates of recent forest loss and degradation. This promise, however, depends on the extent to which biodiversity at forest restoration sites continues to be exposed to threats. A key knowledge gap concerns the extent to which biodiversity recovery in naturally regenerating tropical forests is impacted by trapping for the multi-million-dollar wildlife trade. Here, we use a repeated survey dataset to quantify rates of avian community recovery under forest regeneration, at a flagship restoration site in the lowland rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia. We show that over a decade, forest regeneration was associated with significant abundance increases for 43.8 % of bird species. However, the apparent negative impacts of trade-driven trapping on avian populations also intensified: the proportion of species dependent on very remote forests increased from 5.4 % to 16.2 %. Moreover, the overall accessibility of the forest increased. We found that 14 % of species did not recover as fast as predicted based on the observed forest regeneration over the study period. We found trapping to disproportionately impact species targeted for trade: compared to opportunistically trapped species, twice more species showed increased abundance only in very remote forests. Our results highlight the potential for rapid avifaunal recovery in regenerating tropical forests, but also emphasize the urgency of tackling the serious threat of wildlife trade to Southeast Asia's biodiversity.

Mobbing is a prevalent anti-predatory behaviour in birds where prey actively engage in harassing predators. Functional traits have been shown to affect prey species' tendency to engage in mobbing, but empirical studies have largely neglected to assess the influence of some other potentially important functional traits, such as intraspecific and interspecific sociality, on mobbing or measured different aspects of the behaviour. In this study, we performed playback experiments that elicited mobbing responses from a forest bird community in southern China, to investigate the influence of body mass, foraging strata, as well as intra-and interspecific sociality, on the prevalence of mobbing, as well as the intensity of aggression and vocalness. We found that species with small body masses engaged in more frequent and intense mobbing behaviours. Notably, interspecific sociality was negatively associated with birds' mobbing prevalence and tended to be negatively associated with vocalness.

Protected areas (PAs) are the major conservation tool for ecosystem conservation, but function unequally in mitigating human pressures in practice. Assessing PA vulnerability caused by human pressures and its association with socioeconomic and PA characteristic factors is vital for improving conservation effectiveness and the post-2020 PA expansion. Here, using a new framework integrating the intensity and temporal changes of human pressures in PAs and their matched unprotected areas, we categorize global terrestrial PAs into four anthropogenic vulnerability levels: high (11.7 %), moderate (18.6 %) and low (21.9 %) vulnerability and wilderness (47.8 %). We find significant variations in the anthropogenic vulnerability of PAs between countries, continents, and IUCN categories. Europe has the highest proportion of high-vulnerability PAs (ca. 19.7 % of protected areas in Europe), while South America and Oceania have the highest proportions of low-vulnerability PAs and wilderness PAs, respectively (33.2 % and 75.0 % respectively). The vulnerability of PAs is not significantly associated with socioeconomic factors at the country level, which might reflect the trade-offs between positive and negative outcomes of development. With a new framework that integrated four significant factors for anthropogenic vulnerability assessment, this study demonstrates that global PAs have different anthropogenic vulnerability levels and suggest that some PAs function effectively in mitigating human pressures despite currently intense human pressures within them. Our results also suggest that future evaluations on the conservation status should pay attention not only to PA coverage but also to the anthropogenic vulnerability levels within PAs to achieve higher conservation effectiveness.

Existing quantitative syntheses on how biodiversity responds to anthropogenic habitat change appear to sometimes mix different biodiversity metrics in drawing inferences. This “mixing metrics” practice, if prevalent, would considerably bias our understanding of biodiversity responses and render uninterpretable conclusions. However, the prevalence of this practice remains unknown, and the bias it potentially renders has not been empirically assessed. We fill this gap by conducting a systematic literature assessment of existing syntheses on biodiversity responses to habitat change, along with an analysis of a global database specifically on forest restoration. We found that the “mixing metrics”practice was used in almost a quarter of existing syntheses across a wide range of ecosystem and habitat change types. This practice predictably altered the quantitative, and frequently even the qualitative, inferences on biodiversity responses to forest restoration, in ways contingent on the composition of metrics mixed. We call on future syntheses to be cognizant of the difference in metric meaning and behaviors, and to avoid mixing different metrics in studying biodiversity responses to habitat change.

Commercial timber plantations, particularly monocultures, have limited capacity to support biodiversity. A widely promoted approach to enhance this capacity is the diversification of monocultures into tree mixtures, by adding “secondary” timber species while retaining the production focus on the monoculture species. However, the presumed biodiversity benefits of tree mixtures are yet to be robustly tested, because current evidence predominantly comes from mixed plantations in the general sense, which are often not under active production or differ from monocultures in other important ways. To address this gap, we assess the effectiveness of early-stage tree mixtures in enhancing the avian diversity of Eucalyptus monocultures in southern China, which is the country's most important timber production region and has been pioneering tree mixtures in large trials over the past decade. During the avian breeding and non-breeding seasons in 2021, we conducted rigorous surveys to compare the avian diversity of Eucalyptus monocultures and their tree mixtures involving slow-growing native species, against the reference baseline of mature native forests. We found that tree mixtures exhibited modest advantages over monocultures during the breeding season, and both plantation types had notable shortfalls relative to mature native forests. We additionally found that tree mixtures tended to benefit species that foraged in the medium–low strata, consumed diets of higher trophic levels, and depended more on mature forest habitat. We conclude that the biodiversity benefits of early-stage commercial tree mixtures were rather limited and more modest than typically assumed, highlighting the importance of studying tree mixtures in real-world production settings. Our study also underscores the conservation importance of protecting existing mature native forests.

Understanding how forest loss and degradation impact species populations is a key conservation inquiry. To date, our knowledge of such impacts is predominantly based on measuring “snapshot” abundance responses, which may not reflect long-term population trajectories and risk spurious conclusions. Averting this risk necessitates understanding to what extent and under what conditions abundance metrics may draw inconsistent conclusions with population vital rates, yet such an assessment remains lacking. In this study, we fill this knowledge gap using a systematic literature review, focusing on birds as the study taxon. We searched for published empirical studies that simultaneously measured species' abundance and vital rate responses to forest loss or degradation. We then assessed the level of consistency in conclusions between these two metric types and possible predictors. We identified 48 studies that together reported 163 paired findings based on abundance and vital rate metrics (“cases”), involving 59 species from 12 countries, mostly in North America. We found that in 36.8 % of these cases, findings were inconsistent between the two metric types. We further found that the more recent forest loss or degradation was relative to the time of study, the more likely findings were inconsistent between abundance and vital rates. Our study highlights the caution needed in using abundance to measure population responses to forest loss and degradation, and the necessity to directly measure vital rates whenever possible, particularly when forest loss and degradation are recent.

The Wood Snipe Gallinago nemoricola is one of the least known shorebird species, and its habitat associations are very poorly understood. Here we provide the first assessment of the habitat use of the Wood Snipe during the breeding season. Between May and July 2021 at a 4-km2 alpine meadow in Sichuan province, China, we conducted population surveys and behavioural observations to identify sites where breeding Wood Snipe occurred and foraged. We quantified the habitat characteristics and food resource availability of these sites and compared them with randomly selected “background” sites. Comparison between 34 occurrence sites and 25 background sites indicated that during the breeding season, Wood Snipes are not distributed evenly across alpine meadow habitats, but preferred habitats in the lower part (3,378–3,624 m) of the alpine meadow with intermediate levels of soil moisture. In addition, comparison between 17 foraging sites and 24 background sites showed that the Wood Snipe tended to forage at sites with higher soil fauna abundance. We found weak evidence for denser vegetation cover at its height and no evidence for other biotic habitat variables such as vegetation composition or other abiotic habitat variables such as slope, soil penetrability, or disturbance level to influence Wood Snipe habitat associations. Our results suggest that the actual distribution range of the Wood Snipe during the breeding season may be smaller than expected from the extent of apparently suitable habitat. We advise caution in evaluating the potential habitat availability and distribution of the Wood Snipe, and call for further research to better understand the ecology of this rare species to inform its conservation.

[Agricultural production has replaced natural ecosystems across the planet, becoming a major driver of carbon emissions, biodiversity loss, and freshwater consumption. Here we combined global crop yield and environmental data in a ~1-million-dimensional mathematical optimisation framework to determine how optimising the spatial distribution of global croplands could reduce environmental impacts whilst maintaining current crop production levels. We estimate that relocating current croplands to optimal locations, whilst allowing ecosystems in then-abandoned areas to regenerate, could simultaneously decrease the current carbon, biodiversity, and irrigation water footprint of global crop production by 71%, 87%, and 100%, respectively, assuming high-input farming on newly established sites. The optimal global distribution of crops is largely similar for current and end-of-century climatic conditions across emission scenarios. Substantial impact reductions could already be achieved by relocating only a small proportion of worldwide crop production, relocating croplands only within national borders, and assuming less intensive farming systems.

Forest restoration is being scaled up globally to deliver critical ecosystem services and biodiversity benefits; however, there is a lack of rigorous comparison of cobenefit delivery across different restoration approaches. Through global synthesis, we used 25,950 matched data pairs from 264 studies in 53 countries to assess how delivery of climate, soil, water, and wood production services, in addition to biodiversity, compares across a range of tree plantations and native forests. Benefits of aboveground carbon storage, water provisioning, and especially soil erosion control and biodiversity are better delivered by native forests, with compositionally simpler, younger plantations in drier regions performing particularly poorly. However, plantations exhibit an advantage in wood production. These results underscore important trade-offs among environmental and production goals that policy-makers must navigate in meeting forest restoration commitments.

Numerous restoration programs have been launched worldwide in recent years, but the effectiveness of such programs for biodiversity conservation remains unclear. Additionally, priority areas of restoration need to be identified in a region where resources are limited. Habitat availability combines habitat amounts with interpatch connectivity, governing whether a landscape can shelter biological populations in the long term. Consequently, restoration efforts should focus on enhancing habitat availability to promote biological flows. In this study, we proposed a multi-scale approach to evaluate the effectiveness of restoration program and to set priority areas for forest restoration. The evaluations of effectiveness highlighted the contributions of forest cover change to habitat availability. The restoration priorities of landscapes were ranked by three indicators which are also tightly associated with habitat availability: relative urgency of intervention, efficiency of restoration, and connectivity importance for broader-scale biotic flows. We applied the approach in the Eastern Himalaya region of China, a global biodiversity conservation hotspot. Forest cover has been increasing by 3.4% in this region since 2000 due to the implementation of the Grain-for-Green Program, but not all the new forest areas were available as species habitat and/or stepping stones. By the method we developed, 14% of the areas are ranked as the high restoration priorities aiming to enhance available habitat for multiple species with different dispersal abilities. Our approach can significantly improve the outcome of a restoration program. It is flexible and can aid policy makers in optimizing restoration efforts given the biodiversity conservation goals and available resources.

Societal biosecurity – measures built into everyday society to minimize risks from pests and diseases – is an important aspect of managing epidemics and pandemics. We aimed to identify societal options for reducing the transmission and spread of respiratory viruses. We used SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) as a case study to meet the immediate need to manage the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually transition to more normal societal conditions, and to catalog options for managing similar pandemics in the future. We used a ‘solution scanning’ approach. We read the literature; consulted psychology, public health, medical, and solution scanning experts; crowd-sourced options using social media; and collated comments on a preprint. Here, we present a list of 519 possible measures to reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission and spread. We provide a long list of options for policymakers and businesses to consider when designing biosecurity plans to combat SARS-CoV-2 and similar pathogens in the future. We also developed an online application to help with this process. We encourage testing of actions, documentation of outcomes, revisions to the current list, and the addition of further options.

The crisis generated by the emergence and pandemic spread of COVID-19 has thrown into the global spotlight the dangers associated with novel diseases, as well as the key role of animals, especially wild animals, as potential sources of pathogens to humans. There is a widespread demand for a new relationship with wild and domestic animals, including suggested bans on hunting, wildlife trade, wet markets or consumption of wild animals. However, such policies risk ignoring essential elements of the problem as well as alienating and increasing hardship for local communities across the world, and might be unachievable at scale. There is thus a need for a more complex package of policy and practical responses. We undertook a solution scan to identify and collate 161 possible options for reducing the risks of further epidemic disease transmission from animals to humans, including potential further SARS-CoV-2 transmission (original or variants). We include all categories of animals in our responses (i.e. wildlife, captive, unmanaged/feral and domestic livestock and pets) and focus on pathogens (especially viruses) that, once transmitted from animals to humans, could acquire epidemic potential through high rates of human-to-human transmission. This excludes measures to prevent well-known zoonotic diseases, such as rabies, that cannot readily transmit between humans. We focused solutions on societal measures, excluding the development of vaccines and other preventive therapeutic medicine and veterinary medicine options that are discussed elsewhere. We derived our solutions through reading the scientific literature, NGO position papers, and industry guidelines, collating our own experiences, and consulting experts in different fields. Herein, we review the major zoonotic transmission pathways and present an extensive list of options. The potential solutions are organised according to the key stages of the trade chain and encompass solutions that can be applied at the local, regional and international scales. This is a set of options targeted at practitioners and policy makers to encourage careful examination of possible courses of action, validating their impact and documenting outcomes.

Conservation science is a crisis-oriented discipline focused on reducing human impacts on nature. To explore how the field has changed over the past two decades, we analyzed 3245 applications for oral presentations submitted to the Student Conference on Conservation Science (SCCS) in Cambridge, UK. SCCS has been running every year since 2000, aims for global representation by providing bursaries to early-career conservationists from lower-income countries, and has never had a thematic focus, beyond conservation in the broadest sense. We found that the majority of projects submitted to SCCS were based on primary biological data collected from local scale field studies in the tropics, contrary to established literature which highlights gaps in tropical research. Our results showed a small increase over time in submissions framed around how nature benefits people as well as a small increase in submissions integrating social science. Our findings suggest that students and early-career conservationists could provide pathways to increase availability of data from the tropics and address well-known biases in the published literature towards wealthier countries. We hope this research will motivate efforts to support student projects, ensuring data and results are published and data made publicly available.

Escalating global demand for wildlife products and consequential illegal wildlife trade has become one of the major threats to biodiversity conservation. In the recent COVID-19 pandemic, growing public health risks of wildlife trade and consumption have triggered widespread public concern. In this review, we adopt a multidisciplinary perspective, including sociology, psychology, behavioral science and other disciplines, to understand the motivations for wildlife consumption in China, and to propose scientifically guided behavioral change countermeasures. The current state of wildlife consumption in China reveals certain functional, social, experiential and other non-essential needs of wildlife as major drivers of consumption, which are affected by a host of complex factors. Based on our understanding of the drivers of demand, we suggest using behavioral change frameworks, and a variety of behavioral change methods, including education, social influence, regulation and nudging, to effectively influence and change wildlife consumption behavior. For effective implementation of behavioral change strategies, collaboration needs to be strengthened, both among and across diverse disciplines, actors and scales of interest.

Aim

China's Grain for Green Program (GFGP) is the largest reforestation programme in the world and has been operating since 1999. The GFGP has promoted the establishment of tree plantations over the restoration of diverse native forests. In a previous study, we showed that native forests support a higher species richness and abundance of birds and bees than do GFGP plantations and that mixed-species GFGP plantations support a higher level of bird (but not bee) diversity than do any individual GFGP monocultures (although still below that of native forests). Here, we use metabarcoding of arthropod diversity to test the generality of these results.

Methods

We sampled arthropod communities using pan traps in the land cover types concerned under the GFGP. These land use types include croplands (the land cover being reforested under the GFGP), native forests (the reference ecosystem as the benchmark for the GFGP’s biodiversity effects) and the dominant GFGP reforestation outcomes: monoculture and mixed-species plantations. We used COI-amplicon sequencing (“metabarcoding”) of the arthropod samples to quantify and assess the arthropod community profiles associated with each land cover type.

Results

Native forests support the highest overall levels of arthropod species diversity, followed by mixed-species plantations, followed by bamboo and other monocultures. Also, the arthropod community in native forests shares more species with mixed-species plantations than it does with any of the monocultures. Together, these results broadly corroborate our previous conclusions on birds and bees but show a higher arthropod biodiversity value of mixed-species plantations than previously indicated by bees alone.

Main conclusion

In our previous study, we recommended that GFGP should prioritize the conservation and restoration of native forests. Also, where plantations are to be used, we recommended that the GFGP should promote mixed-species arrangements over monocultures. Both these recommendations should result in more effective protection of terrestrial biodiversity, which is an important objective of China's land-sustainability spending. The results of this study strengthen these recommendations because our policy prescriptions are now also based on a dataset that includes over 500 species-resolution taxa, ranging across the Arthropoda.

Ecological restoration, when implemented effectively and sustainably, contributes to protecting biodiversity; improving human health and wellbeing; increasing food and water security; delivering goods, services, and economic prosperity; and supporting climate change mitigation, resilience, and adaptation. It is a solutions-based approach that engages communities, scientists, policymakers, and land managers to repair ecological damage and rebuild a healthier relationship between people and the rest of nature. When combined with conservation and sustainable use, ecological restoration is the link needed to move local, regional, and global environmental conditions from a state of continued degradation, to one of net positive improvement. The second edition of the International Principles and Standards for the Practice of Ecological Restoration (the Standards) presents a robust framework for restoration projects to achieve intended goals, while addressing challenges including effective design and implementation, accounting for complex ecosystem dynamics (especially in the context of climate change), and navigating trade-offs associated with land management priorities and decisions.

The Standards establish eight principles that underpin ecological restoration. Principles 1 and 2 articulate important foundations that guide ecological restoration: effectively engaging a wide range of stakeholders, and fully utilizing available scientific, traditional, and local knowledge, respectively. Principles 3 and 4 summarize the central approach to ecological restoration, by highlighting ecologically appropriate reference ecosystems as the target of restoration and clarifying the imperative for restoration activities to support ecosystem recovery processes. Principle 5 underscores the use of measurable indicators to assess progress toward restoration objectives. Principle 6 lays out the mandate for ecological restoration to seek the highest attainable recovery. Tools are provided to identify the levels of recovery aspired to and to track progress. Principle 7 highlights the importance of restoration at large spatial scales for cumulative gains. Finally, ecological restoration is one of several approaches that address damage to ecosystems and Principle 8 clarifies its relationships to allied approaches on a “Restorative Continuum”.

The Standards highlight the role of ecological restoration in connecting social, community, productivity, and sustainability goals. The Standards also provide recommended performance measures for restorative activities for industries, communities, and governments to consider. In addition, the Standards enhance the list of practices and actions that guide practitioners in planning, implementation, and monitoring activities. The leading practices and guidance include discussion on appropriate approaches to site assessment and identification of reference ecosystems, different restoration approaches including natural regeneration, consideration of genetic diversity under climate change, and the role of ecological restoration in global restoration initiatives. This edition also includes an expanded glossary of restoration terminology. SER and its international partners produced the Standards for adoption by communities, industries, governments, educators, and land managers to improve ecological restoration practice across all sectors and in all ecosystems, terrestrial and aquatic. The Standards support development of ecological restoration plans, contracts, consent conditions, and monitoring and auditing criteria. Generic in nature, the Standards framework can be adapted to particular ecosystems, biomes, or landscapes; individual countries; or traditional cultures. The Standards are aspirational and provide tools that are intended to improve outcomes, promote best practices, and deliver net global environmental and social benefits. As the world enters the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030), the Standards provide a blueprint for ensuring ecological restoration achieves its full potential in delivering social and environmental equity and, ultimately, economic benefits and outcomes.
